If you Love Me…

Jesus was the perfect role model for each of us, Jesus demonstrated the perfect reflection of love and obedience to the Father. In the scripture we find that we are to “keep His commands” what exactly does this mean though? I have listed a couple reference passages below to help you first understand that question and statement that I am referring to….

John 14:15 – “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (NKJV).

John 14:23-24 – “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me” (NKJV).

1 John 5:2-3 – “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments” (NKJV).

When Jesus says, if you “love me” you will keep my “commands” and that we will know that “we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments”, what in the world is He really talking about and how does obeying have anything to do with truly loving Him?

Is Jesus referring to the original Ten Commandments we learn about in the Old Testament or just the few things He mentioned as His commands in the New Testament?

Jesus is the way the truth and the life (John 14:6), He also tells us that “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32).

The passages that we read in John we must understand are actually referencing all the teachings and examples of Jesus, not simply just a couple key points in His life. Jesus was a perfect role model and every example, every teaching, every word should be obeyed and followed.

Your relationship is known to be genuine with Christ when you are willing, committed, and passionate about following His ‘commands’ or teachings, and reflecting a life that Christ demonstrated for each of us. Jesus says in a since when you listen to me, live by what I have told you, and reflect the life that I lived, then you will prove that you love me.

There is a difference between saying, I love you and showing that I love you. If you truly believe in Him, and truly love Him, show it, prove it. Afterall, the Bible says that even the demons believe – and tremble (James 2:19).

In your walk with God, demonstrate the love of God to others just as Jesus did, share His teachings, live by His example, and stay committed and dedicated to His word. Your relationship with God will continue to grow the more that you draw near to Him, and the more that you reflect Him to the world around you.
